Present Joys

“We thank the Lord of heaven and earth
who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”

I obtained my BFA at Columbus College of Art & Design.

What I did this week (26 apr 2013)

  • Had a very disappointing monday, consisting of an extremely dysfunctional package design class followed by an ill-planned friendship lunch. (Turns out the tiki bar on Grant is closed on mondays.)
  • Managed to tweet about White Castle a whole lot, but didn’t do a whole lot of actual work. This project is shaping up to be quite challenging.
  • Almost broke down into tears in Cheryl Steele’s class after realizing the true amount of work due. It doesn’t help that the class is full of fashion majors to whom I cannot relate on any level.
  • Finished up my package design project in a hurry on wednesday night with copious amounts of glue gun, all so I could use the shrink-wrapping machine at school on thursday. You see, I have all these things planned out very carefully.
  • Had some nice old-fashioned group critiques in Advanced Type both tuesday and thursday. It is nice to sit in a circle and talk about your work.
  • Braunschweiger sandwiches.
  • Worked on my final garment for Draping. Lots.
  • Drove back to campus friday evening for the opening reception of the senior graphic design thesis show. Introduced myself to one of the senior ad teachers; ate cheese; awkwardly misunderstood sarcasm; criticized and lauded people’s work with A, my critique cohort.

What I did this week (18 apr 2013)

  • Worked on marble packaging in package design. Everything is due two mondays from now and it’s really starting to get tough.
  • Skipped friendship lunch to hear Fran Yoshioka give a presentation about trend forecasting. Went home and wrote a two-page paper about the talk for Cheryl Steele, whose homework-assigning knows no limit.
  • Stressed out in Draping trying to work on my final garment. It’s the most mentally taxing class I’m taking, and it’s an elective I had to get special permission to take. But it’s simultaneously so much fun!
  • Got into a big argument about the color black with the fashion majors in my Draping class. (Because I think black is disgusting.)
  • Had a very laid-back thursday morning. Jason was absent from our White Castle team, so me and Amanda talked for an hour and then she went home to work.
  • Took thursday afternoon off of my internship to participate in a very worthless internship presentation thing. I sat in a room with eleven other random students who had also done internships; we all gave five-minute presentations about our experiences. At least it’s done.
  • Spent two more hours in the fashion lab on thursday afternoon working on my final garment for Draping.

What I did this week (12 apr 2013)

  • Turned in my ten-week package design project; had a crit. Received very high praise from my teacher: “Everyone look at this: this is what a ten-week project should look like! I’m giving Nigel an A+.”
  • Ate lunch at the new Hills Market with Ian and Sarah (who both bought humongous Frostop drinks) and Don (who should have bought a giant Frostop if he wanted in on the photo).
  • Started on new projects in tuesday morning in: in Ad Concepts, I started a new team project to re-position White Castle. (I’m working with Amanda and Jason, the usual suspects.) In Advanced Type, I started a new project to sell baby food to teenage girls.
  • Continued to be very stressed in Cheryl Steele’s draping class. The latest little burden: I have to go watch a lecture monday morning and write a paper in time for next tuesday’s class.
  • Almost forgot to take a test for my online Intro to Psych class. Phew—that was a close call!
  • Made a ton of progress on my team project to re-position White Castle. So much progress, in fact, that we decided to take a field trip to White Castle during class.
  • Got stuck in the elevator in Crane. It went up to the third floor, made a scary sound, and slowly sunk to the second floor. Scary! (I only use the elevator a few times a year. Go figure.)
  • Had a bad attitude about the brand-new warm weather this week. Temperatures got into the high 70s! My body was not made for weather this warm.

What I did this week (5 apr 2013)

  • Received the welcome, unexpected news that our package design final is due the following monday. It’s about time.
  • Got completely stood up for friendship lunch on monday. All my friends are way too busy this time of year.
  • Put in a bunch of hours to finish my Big Cooking Project for Burleigh early.
  • Presented my Big Cooking Project on tuesday morning, even though I wasn’t scheduled to present until thursday. It was nice to get it done ahead of time.
  • Draped cowl-necked bodices and peg skirts with Cheryl Steele.
  • Made some really really killer booklet mockup templates. (The drop shadows and gradients are top notch.)
  • Used said booklet mockups to present yet another final project for yet another class (advanced type).
  • Spent the majority of my free time constructing my knit dress project for Draping or working on my package design finals. No rest for the wicked.
