Present Joys

who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”

I obtained my BFA at Columbus College of Art & Design.

What I did this week (2 nov 2012)

  • Called off my monday independent study meeting for fear of not having made enough progress. (It was a good call.)
  • Started getting sick on monday and was sick for the rest of the week.
  • Stayed late after Marketing to film a short, low-key video for our group project. We shot it in the admissions meeting room and had some fun with staging.
  • Lost my hat on Cleveland Avenue in monday’s Hurricane Sandy weather. Had to chase after it.
  • Worked really hard to create color comps for my ad class.
  • Made some rivets in my jewelry class, including one my teacher said was the best in the class.
  • Redid my ad concept, rendering my hours of comp work pretty much worthless. That’s how she goes.
  • Tried to finish my package design final and failed miserably. It is probably the clumsiest-looking thing I have created in all of college.

What I did this week (26 oct 2012)

  • Had an offsite friendship lunch which was an extremely nice change-of-pace.
  • Enjoyed another productive, encouraging independent study meeting. Concerning my color palette and page wireframe, Lutz said “I think you’re done!” That .
  • Stayed late after Marketing to work on our “team project”. We took about an hour and finished the whole thing.
  • On tuesday (my birthday), brought frosted sugar cookies to school. Gave a special sprinkle-laden cookie to John, my birthday twin.
  • Finished my first bezel-set ring. Polished it repeatedly.
  • Tracked down CCAD’s chair of Fashion Design and got signed into two fashion classes for next semester. A real boon!
  • After jewelry, went to the North Market for some delicious Polish food with Jason and Amanda. They paid for my meal! and the woman serving us gave me a free extra birthday-portion!
  • Drove to school at 9:30pm for a super-late meeting about a pop-up store thing that will be materializing later this semester. I did it mostly for M-Tabs. More on that as things unfold.
  • On thursday, made actual progress in ad class. We are supposed to generate ad comps over the weekend.
  • Had a nice, reassuring conversation with Mr. Felton about my copywriting skills.

What I did this week (19 oct 2012)

  • Had a very very good independent study meeting with Mr. Lutz, during which he also helped me brainstorm for my ad project.
  • Passed the midterm point in Marketing, which means the lectures are shorter and more laid-back. That is nice.
  • Spent a highly unnecessary amount of time discussing résumés.
  • Finished the planar ring I was making, polished it one more time for good measure, and turned it in!
  • Worked at Sew to Speak on wednesday afternoon, which was kinda weird to do in the middle of the week. (But it was very nice, too!)
  • Combined our ad class with Mr. Lutz’ next-door class. Lutz and Burleigh both drew on the board at once and we generated a giant mind map about Coleman camping gear. It was extremely fun to be with a bunch of people I enjoy and to do mind mapping like old times.
  • Saw Jason Clary teaching perspective drawing on the quad. He has an even bigger beard than he used to, and he is as great as ever.
  • Experimented with different copper patinas. None of them worked satisfactorily. I’ll polish instead.
  • Did lots of homework. I am very busy.

What I did this week (12 oct 2012)

  • Started our second project in package design. We are designing a bar of soap and its packaging.
  • Received a guided tour of Mr. Hazlerig’s soap collection, which is expansive and very smelly.
  • Got confused about an assignment and wrote a four-page paper monday morning in my package design class.
  • Narrowly made it through a “feminism and gender stereotypes” lecture in my comics class. That is all I will say about that.
  • Took home the marketing midterm, completed most of it on monday night, and turned it in tuesday afternoon.
  • Had a woman from Career Services come talk to our ad class about the Internship Fair next month. She tried to be relevant by calling herself a geek and making annoyingly-contrived self-deprecating jokes.
  • Wrote 40 company slogans for copywriting. Spent both classes talking about slogans. My head is spinning.
  • Picked up a piece of molten copper and burned the fingertips on my left hand. Ouch.
  • Got to school early to pick up a drawing from last year that Boryana had been storing in AMF.
  • Had major chill time in Burleigh’s class. Spent pretty much the whole time doing homework and chatting. It’s nice to have a little break after all the frenzy of last week’s finals.
  • Finished socks I was making for my jewelry teacher and delivered themto her. She was quite pleased!
  • Finished making my first ring. And I used the polishing machine with no major injuries!
  • Started thinking about registration, which is stressing me out a lot.
