Scarlet Street. I just watched this movie tonight, and boy, was it great. It’s probably best classified as a black comedy. The plot, which is delightfully complex, is full of “oh no!” moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. Edward G. Robinson’s performance is great, and the costumes are really fun to look at. And because it’s in the public domain, you can watch the whole thing at archive.org, which you should go do right away.
The Stranger. Yes, Orson Welles does look freakishly like John Candy as Steve Roman, but even so this is a stellar movie. Great clothes (with a real New England proto-ivy style feel), great acting, and great directing. I’m no film buff, but this is the kind of movie that makes me want to study Welles’ directing techniques; there are many beautifully-done shots in this film. What’s not to love?
Fearless. I just watched this and hey, woah, it was fantastic. Jeff Bridges plays an unfeeling, truth-telling plane-crash survivor who doesn’t fully become himself until the end of the movie. The cinematography is superb throughout. The airplane crash scene itself reminded me of something from 2001: A Space Odyssey, but with actual meaning. Honestly, I don’t know why this film isn’t considered a classic. Hooray!
The Fisher King. Watched this last night. Jeff Bridges looks so young. Do not trust IMDb when it says there are only eight occurrences of the f-word.
This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen. It had me seriously laughing out loud the entire 110 minutes. (some of the language is nsfw!)
