Present Joys

I didn’t take this photo, but I did see Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy at the Wexner Center a few days ago (25 jan 2013). The show had a sterile vibe, even by Wex standards: there was no opening act and the show started right away at 8pm. But the sterile vibe was a perfect presentation for the band’s very tight, acoustic set. Everything was great, from the very first song, “May It Always Be” sounding exactly like the original recording on Ease Down the Road. It was super super super.

This was the second time I’d seen BPB, and this show was much more intimate. I remember at the show in Nelsonville, there were enough people playing instruments that Will only played guitar about half of the show, spending the rest of his time dancing around instrument-less. This time, he played guitar the entire show, so there was a lot less monkeying around. I found this to be something of a mixed blessing.

A bunch of my friends decided to come with me with basically no background knowledge, and I was a little worried about Will’s general weirdness being a turn-off. Thankfully, I think they really enjoyed it and were not too weirded out by things. One last thing: Emmett Kelly is a really cool dude.

What I did this week (25 jan 2013)

  • Didn’t have class on MLK Day; consequently pretty much completely forgot about my Package design homework. (Hmm, I still need to do that…)
  • Spent most of tuesday morning’s ad class chatting with John and Carly about internships and school and life. It was a lovely time. I confess I’m a little jealous the food perks that John and Carly get working at Charley’s Grilled Subs.
  • Hurried over to Draping, my only fashion class. I’m still getting used to it! Felt very rewarded when Cheryl Steele drew a red checkmark on my front bodice piece.
  • Worked at OhioHealth for a few hours on tuesday and for ten hours on wednesday. Did some serious graphic design/layout work, which was a refreshing change!
  • Ran a downtown errand during my lunch break on wednesday. I felt very businessman-like.
  • Spent most of thursday morning’s ad class in the hallway talking to M-Tabs and then Michelle. (A superb use of time!) Most of that time was spent complaining about senior year ad classes, unfortunately.
  • Worked at OhioHealth for a few more hours; spent time trying to write headlines for a facebook page (ironically enough for me, a facebook-hater!).
  • Went back to school to do some draping homework. While there, I encountered the always-super-cool Kelly Malec-Kosac just as she was getting off work, and I overheard Suzanne Cotton tell a story about meeting Diane von Fürstenberg.

What I did this week (18 jan 2013)

  • Went back to school; starting with second-semester Package Design on monday morning at 8am. We were assigned a new project and dismissed by 8:30am.
  • Went to the library and picked up some new books; got some reading done.
  • Had the first friendship lunch of the semester, which was well-attended and wonderful.
  • On tuesday morning, had the first Burleigh’s ad class.
  • Moved one classroom next door and did Advanced type, also with Mr. Burleigh.
  • Went to Draping, a once-weekly class taught by Cheryl Steele, a person I really like. It’s required for fashion majors but I was allowed to join. It looks like it’ll be lots of fun!
  • After that, started my new job as an in-house graphic design intern at OhioHealth. Worked for literally two hours and went home at quitting time. Tuesdays are long days.
  • Went back to OhioHealth on wednesday and worked a ten hour day (8am–6pm). It was draining.
  • On thursday morning, had my back-to-back Burleigh classes again.
  • Went back to OhioHealth and worked for three hours. (I have to work fifteen hours a week. How’s that for distributing my time evenly?)
