Present Joys

“We thank the Lord of heaven and earth
who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”

Old, beautiful mugshots

Mugshot

These photos have been making their ways around the internet lately. They’re from the New South Wales, Australia police department from around the 1920s. It’s like a treasure chest of beautiful imagery.

I look to a number of periods for style inspiration, but perhaps none more so than the twenties. 1920s fashion is like 1930s fashion but with a lot less order and sensibleness. It fluctuates between the sublime and really odd, but it’s always really interesting to look into. I’d post all these pictures, but instead I’ll just urge you to look at more of them here.

(I especially love the men’s hairstyles from this period.)

I recently had a conversation with my twitter friend Aegir Hallmundur about the different ways people write the date. I’m quite partial to the British D-M-Y format, instead of the confusing and awkward American convention of M-D-Y. Aegir reminded me of these old Polish postage stamps that he’d highlighted on his blog. Apparently it’s relatively common in eastern Europe to use Roman numerals to notate the month. Its a great solution to that perennial which one of these numbers is the month and which is the day? confusion and beautiful to boot. I’m posting it here because I think more people should pick up this habit.
