Present Joys

“We thank the Lord of heaven and earth
who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”
What is faith’s foundation strong?
What awakes my heart to song?
He Who bore my sinful load,
Purchased for me peace with God,
Jesus Christ, the Crucified.
Ask ye what great thing I know by Johann C. Schwedler. This is a great little hymn that is sung to the tune Hendon (better known as Take my life and let it be).

I love J.I. Packer’s definition of ‘the modernist heresy’:

the newer is the truer,
only what is recent is decent,
every shift of ground is a step forward,
and every latest word must be hailed as the last word on its subject.
