Just in time to go on vacation, we got the rest of our fence painted with linseed oil.
The first 5-gallon pail of linseed oil I bought was slightly fancy and slightly expensive, but it only got me about a third of the way. Once I confirmed how much more I’d need to finish the job, I opted to get 10 more gallons of commodity stuff in 5-gallon pails from Menard’s. The difference is very notable: the cheap stuff is darker, thicker in texture, and doesn’t smell nearly as nice. But it answers well for this application.
We probably applied the oil too thick. It’s very difficult to maintain a light coat when the wood is both so rough and porous. Thankfully, I’m not in any hurry to get to painting it, so I can leave this all sit for weeks or months and let all the oil cure.
